Cars in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Human Blood, Police Confirm

Police reported they were contacted by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau covered with reddish liquid

Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.

Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.

A senior political figure stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
