British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
